Kamika Ekadashi Story (Katha)

Yudhishthira asked, “Govinda! Vasudeva! I bow to you! What is the name of the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Shravan? Please describe it.”

Lord Krishna replied, “King, listen, I will tell you a sin-destroying story that Brahma once narrated to Narada.

Narada asked, ‘Lord! Lotus-seated One! I wish to know about the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Shravan. What is its name, who are its deities, and what merits does it bestow? Please tell me all this, O Lord!'”

Brahma said, “Narada, listen—I will answer your question for the benefit of all worlds. The Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Shravan is called ‘Kamika.’ Merely remembering it grants the merits of performing the Vajapeya Yagna. On this day, one should worship the Lord by the names Sridhar, Hari, Vishnu, Madhava, and Madhusudan. The benefits of worshiping Lord Krishna on Kamika Ekadashi surpass those attained by bathing in the Ganges, visiting Kashi, Naimisharanya, or Pushkar. Worshiping Lord Krishna during the time when Jupiter is in Leo and during Vyatipat and Dandayoga grants the same benefits as bathing in the Godavari. Donating the entire Earth, including oceans and forests, or observing the Kamika Ekadashi fast are considered equally meritorious. The merit gained from donating a cow with all its accessories is also achieved by observing Kamika Ekadashi. Worshiping Lord Sridhar in the month of Shravan is equivalent to worshiping all deities, including Gandharvas and Nagas. Therefore, those fearful of sins should meticulously observe the Kamika Ekadashi and worship Lord Hari on this day. Kamika Ekadashi is the best means to liberate those drowning in the ocean of worldly sins. The benefits gained from studying spiritual knowledge are far surpassed by those of observing Kamika Ekadashi. Those who observe this fast and keep vigil at night will neither encounter the fearsome Yamaraja nor suffer degradation.”

Red gemstones, pearls, cat’s eye, and coral may be used for worship, yet Lord Vishnu is not as pleased with these as He is with the offering of Tulsi leaves. Worshiping Lord Keshava with Tulsi sprigs eradicates a lifetime of sins. Tulsi, which destroys all sins upon sight, purifies the body upon touch, cures diseases upon bowing, frightens even Yamaraja when watered, brings one close to God when planted, and grants salvation when offered at the feet of the Lord, is truly revered. A person who offers lamps day and night on Ekadashi accumulates merits that even Chitragupta cannot count. Lighting a lamp before Lord Krishna on Ekadashi ensures that one’s ancestors in heaven are satisfied with the nectar of immortality. After leaving the mortal body, a person who lights lamps with ghee or sesame oil before the Lord attains a heavenly abode, honored with countless lamps.

Lord Krishna said, “Yudhishthira, I have described the greatness of Kamika Ekadashi to you. Kamika Ekadashi removes all sins, and humans should definitely observe this fast. It grants heavenly abode and great merit. Whoever listens to its significance with devotion is freed from all sins and attains the abode of Lord Vishnu.

Spiritual Significance of Kamika Ekadashi

Kamika Ekadashi, observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Shravan month, holds profound spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. This sacred day is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu, specifically in his forms as Sridhar, Hari, Vishnu, Madhava, and Madhusudana. According to ancient scriptures, including the discourse between Lord Krishna and Yudhishthira in the Mahabharata, Kamika Ekadashi is a potent occasion for devotees seeking liberation from their sins and attainment of spiritual merits.

The observance of Kamika Ekadashi is believed to yield benefits comparable to performing the grand Vajapeya Yagna. Devotees who fast and engage in worship on this day are said to gain merits greater than those attained through pilgrimage to sacred sites like Ganga, Kashi, Naimisharanya, and Pushkar. The rituals associated with Kamika Ekadashi include offering prayers, performing pujas, and lighting lamps in front of Lord Vishnu’s idol. It is said that even a single leaf of Tulsi offered to Lord Vishnu on this day can wipe out the sins accumulated over numerous lifetimes.

The spiritual significance of Kamika Ekadashi also extends to the act of lighting lamps. As per the scriptures, lighting lamps filled with ghee or sesame oil in front of Lord Vishnu’s idol not only purifies the soul but also brings satisfaction to the ancestors residing in the heavenly realms. This act of devotion ensures that the devotee receives countless blessings and is freed from the cycle of birth and death.

Kamika Ekadashi is thus a divine opportunity for devotees to cleanse their souls, seek forgiveness for their sins, and attain spiritual elevation. Observing this sacred day with utmost devotion and sincerity not only brings divine blessings but also paves the way for a harmonious and prosperous life. Devotees who embrace the spiritual practices of Kamika Ekadashi are assured of attaining the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu, transcending worldly suffering and achieving eternal peace.
